Other topics could include the new housekeeping flags\, core sharing validation and more.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]2:30-3:00 PM: Let the Kernel Monitor Your Real-Time Application\nSpeaker: John Ogness\, Linutronix GmbH\nThe Linux kernel has a new Runtime Verifier (RV) monitor that reacts if any real-time application performs an operation that could lead to unexpected or unbounded latencies. This includes evaluating sleep and wake events in order to identify likely priority inversion scenarios. \nThis presentation briefly mentions the necessary precautions all Linux real-time developers must consider. Then it explains how the rtapp monitor is enabled and used. And finally\, several examples will be shown of the rtapp monitor identifying issues in real-time applications as well as pointing out how such issues could be fixed. \nThe new rtapp RV monitor is easy to use and truly belongs in the toolbox of anyone developing\, testing\, or verifying Linux real-time systems.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]3:00-3:30 PM Break[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]3:30-4:00 PM: Finding sources of Latency via Tracing\nSpeaker: Steven Rostedt\, Qube-RT \nA real-time system has worse-case latency requirements. When an unacceptable latency is discovered\, it is best to find where that happened. The tracing subsystem of the Linux kernel is a strong tool to investigate those latencies. While PREEMPT_RT provides the foundation for deterministic Linux systems\, achieving predictable behavior in mixed-criticality environments introduces challenges that are not visible in synthetic benchmarks. \nThis session presents our experience deploying and evaluating PREEMPT_RT on modern ARM64 industrial computing platforms. We discuss how real-time workloads coexist with non-real-time applications\, and how system design decisions impact temporal isolation and worst-case latency. \nTopics include CPU isolation\, IRQ steering\, shared-resource contention\, memory and cache interference\, and methodologies for characterizing real-time performance under system stress. \nAttendees will gain practical insights into building predictable industrial Linux systems through an end-to-end design approach\, with PREEMPT_RT as a key building block.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]4:30-5:00 PM: Where PREEMPT_RT meats the dynamics of container runtimes\nSpeaker: Florian Bezdeka\, Siemens\nIn the past RT enabled systems were kind of static. Well chosen hardware with a well understood RT workload on top\, both parts – hardware and software – under full control. We call that the good old (and boring) times here 😉 \nWe are facing a different situation here. Customers want to consolidate and use their own hardware. At the same time the software part needs a flexible deployment and update mechanism as different parts of the application landscape might be delivered by different entities. \nThis is where PREEMPT_RT meets the dynamics of container runtimes. We have to prepare the platform for RT workloads that will be running next to a couple of non-RT applications at the same time. As you might imagine\, there are a couple of challenges to solve. Resource management is definitely one of them. (RT) applications have to express their needs. From isolated CPU cores to exclusive access to network interfaces: all parts need a proper configuration. \nIn this talk I will start with explaining our use case by providing some more details. Afterwards we will start a short journey through problems and bugs we were fighting against. DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Scheduler and Real-Time Microconference \nEvent Time: October 7\, 10:00-13:30 \nLocation: Prague Congress Center \nBuilding upon the success of last year\, we propose a combined microconference focused on the Real-Time and Scheduler subsystems. These two areas are fundamentally intertwined and continue to drive cross-cutting changes\, especially following the upstream integration of PREEMPT_RT. The Linux scheduler is central to overall system performance. Addressing the challenges of modern computing—from achieving low latency to maximizing high throughput across diverse topologies and workloads\, and scaling from small\, power-constrained devices to large-scale HPC systems—is key to delivering the optimal user experience. \nSince last year’s microconference\, progress has been made on the following topics:\n– Cache aware scheduler\n– Paravirt Scheduling: Framework for better physical CPU utilization\n– CPU Isolation and IPI interference\n– Push callback for fair scheduler\n– Runtime verification\n– Proxy execution \nDiscussions on certain topics were also carried forward at the OSPM 2026 conference. \nIdeas of topics to be discussed include (but are not limited to):\n– Responsiveness of fair tasks\n– Improve PREEMPT_RT\n– Locking and priority inversion\n– Improve SCHED_DEADLINE\n– CPU isolation\n– New topology\, including hybrid or heterogeneous system\n– Tooling for debugging low latency analysis \nThis is not an exhaustive list. We welcome all proposals related to process scheduling.\nThe goal is to discuss open problems\, preferably with patch set submissions already being discussed on the mailing list.
